Ronald Jacob Aschbacher

March 5, 1932 -

December 31, 2018

Ron peacefully passed away on December 31, 2018. He was born on March 5, 1932, the first child of Jacob (Jake) Aschbacher and Laura Godsil Aschbacher. Ron attended school in Prineville and spent his youth working with his father & brother on the family dairy ranch and helping deliver milk for his father's Ochoco Creamery. Ron graduated from Crook County High School in 1951 as an outstanding athlete. During his high school years he competed in everything from riding bucking broncos in the rodeo to becoming a tough and well respected football player. He played in the 1951 East West Shrine Game where teammates voted him most valuable player.

Ron continued his football endeavor at Oregon State College (Now OSU) where he earned numerous accolades and awards including 1st team All-Conference and All American honorable mention. Although football was his favorite sport, he also lettered in basketball and track & field events during his high school and college years. Ron was a member of Phi Gamma Delta at OSU.

Ron applied for the Marine Corps Officer Candidate School while still in college, however the Colonel hearing of his football talents, recruited him for the Marine Corps floundering football team.

In 1955 Ron was drafted in the 10th round by the San Francisco 49ers.

Ron was hunter, fisherman and an avid snow skier. He loved to be the first skier on the powder at Mt. Ashland and for unacknowledged reasons, earned the nick name "crash backer".

Ron enjoyed a successful 35 year career as a commercial insurance broker specializing in Lumber/Logging and Road Construction, retiring in 2000. In his retirement he enjoyed "going back to his roots" riding his John Deere tractor on his hay ranch in Eagle Point, OR. He also spent many enjoyable times judging, training for and entering in Retriever Field Trials all over the western states. He loved his labs. Many motor home trips were also a favorite pastime.

Ron was a lifelong member of Rogue Valley University Club and OSU Athletic Alumni Association.

Ron is survived by his wife of 31 years, Elaine, as well as sons Dana Aschbacher (Cindy) and Shaun Aschbacher both of Portland, a brother, Darrel Aschbacher of Prineville and one Granddaughter, Ally Aschbacher. Other family members include step children and many nieces & nephews.

Preceding Ron in death were his Mother, Laura, Father, Jake and sisters Donna Aschbacher and half sister, Thelma Slouber.

The family has requested memorial contributions may be made to OSU Athletic Fund or the Southern Oregon Friends of Hospice (
