September 8, 2018

Dorothy Bernice Black (Abel) 99 years of age, passed away surrounded by family on September 8, 2018. Dorothy was born April 8, 1919 in Sloan Iowa, and spent her childhood in southwestern Minnesota, coming to Oregon in 1940. She was the third of five children with the other four preceding her in death.

Dorothy married Clarence Benedict Black in Lake Benton Minnesota in 1939 and they spent 58 years laughing and loving life together. He preceded her in death in 1997.

Dorothy was an avid gardener. Flowers, vegetables, and roses thrived under her care. At one point she grew over 100 roses and had a garden with flowers spread over a half acre. If she could plant it- it would grow.

She spent 30 years working at Rogue River packing company and 26 years at Harry and David where she met many life-long friends that shared laughter along the assembly line of pears and roses. She had a strong work ethic and enjoyed the work. She had a gift for creating just enough mischief to keep the crew giggling while still meeting packing goals.

Dorothy was a member of the Methodist church for 70 + years. Dorothy and Clarence spent most Sundays in church and Dorothy was active in the Circle Group that prayed for those in need and contributed to the daily requirements of the church.

Dorothy lived life with enthusiasm. She viewed the world with an unending curiosity filled with many moments of laughter at what life gave her. Her happiness was contagious to all that were blessed to spend time with her.

Her heart was strong to the end from the love she gave to those in her life. Even after her passing, that love carries on. She will be incredibly missed by all who knew her. 99 years just wasn't enough.

Dorothy is survived by two children, Connie R. Baker (Black) and Michael D. Black. Dorothy has two grandchildren, Robert Pool and Stacy Motschenbacher; and three amazing great-grandchildren.

Services for Dorothy Black will be held at at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, September 15, 2018 Medford First United Methodist Church at 607 W. Main Street, Medford, Oregon.
