Larry Eskew

January 22, 1941 -

December 28, 2018

Larry Eskew, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away peacefully on December 28, 2018 at the age of 77, after battling cancer for a year.

The youngest of six, Larry was born to Lee Roy and Dorothy Eskew in Gold Hill, January 22, 1941. He graduated from Crater High School in 1959, attended Oregon Technical Institute but was called to Army active duty for two years. He returned to OTI, completed his training and began work as a draftsman at Sandia Corp. in Livermore, CA. Later he took a position in Kwajalein Atoll in the Marshall Islands as a draftsman but soon began managing the boat marina teaching sailing and water skiing with off time spent scuba diving. In 1968, he moved to California to attend Cal Poly. It was during this time that he met the love of his life, Terrie (Phillips). They were married June 7, 1969. In 1972, after graduation with a degree in industrial engineering, they moved to Santa Maria where Larry worked as an engineer for CBS records and later as an engineer for ITT at Vandenberg Air Force Base until retirement in 2003. His colleagues remember him for his strong work ethic, company BBQs and his green dune buggy.

Over the years, Larry took pleasure in giving back — Little League, Cub Scouts, and BBQ fund raisers. In retirement he acquired the street rod of his dreams, a 1933 Ford Tudor Sedan and served as president of the Bent Axles Car Club. He arranged for the club's participation in supporting many charities. He enjoyed camping, fishing, water and snow-skiing with his children and friends, but he was happiest being in his workshop. His grandkids brought him joy to the very end.

Larry is survived by his wife of 49 years, Terrie Eskew; son, Bryan Eskew (Elaine) of Santa Maria; daughter, Amy Baker (Brian) of Bellingham, WA; grandchildren, Benjamin and Addison Baker, and Fiona and Maeve Eskew; his sisters, Beth Ness (Doug) of Trail and Donna Johnson (Don) of Central Point; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by parents, Lee Roy and Dorothy Eskew; and brothers, Duane, Roland and Gerald "Jake" Eskew.

A memorial service will be held January 6, 2019 at the Santa Maria Elks Lodge, 1309 N. Bradley Rd. At 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Dignity Health Hospice, Santa Maria, CA.
