Iris S. French

Iris S. French, 79, mother, grandmother, and friend to everyone died peacefully on February 28, 2019 after a swift battle with cancer.

Iris was born and grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan. She road tripped to California, via Texas, with her cousin and best friend, Peggy Turley in 1962, where she met the love of her life, Jo W. French Sr. Iris and Jo shared 53 beautiful years together.

More interested in getting things done than taking credit, she worked tirelessly to advance the goals of the organizations she believed in. Iris spent most of her working life as an Administrative Assistant* to the Headmaster at Flintridge Preparatory School in La Canada, California. (*She ran the school). In retirement she volunteered her time and energy to Hospice Unique Boutique, Ashland Kiwanis, and P.E.O. (Philanthropic Educational Organization).

Iris sought to instill in her children and grandchildren a love of life, a sense of humor, and an optimistic outlook. She loved to dance spontaneously and wholeheartedly. Her appreciation for life was infectious. Her house was a loving and warm sanctuary to all. She often took in those in need and created a default second home for her friends and the friends of her children.

An avid cook who poured her love into every meal, she created casseroles to live for and desserts to die for. She expressed her love not only through food but through her crafts – her beautiful and creative quilts will be a lasting part of her legacy. She also found great joy in nature, both in her yard and in her outdoor adventures with family.

Iris is survived by her daughter Allison and her partner Emily, son Jo, son Brian and his wife Becky, her grandchildren Haley and Christopher, her cousin Peggy Turley, her brother Bill Sylvester, and her brother Bud Sylvester and his wife Mary. She is also survived by her furry, four-legged companion, Fritz, and her grandpuppies Lady Algebra, Moose, Baxter, and Jemma.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to PEO Chapter F.O. for the purpose of establishing a named scholarship for women in Iris French's name.

Checks can be mailed to Pamela Norton 527 Sutton Place, Ashland, OR 97520
