Gary Almquist

May 13, 1946 - July 16, 2018

Gary Almquist passed away Monday, July 16, 2018 at his home in Talent, Oregon surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born May 13, 1946 in Bell, California. He was raised on the "Almquist Egg Ranch" in Costa Mesa, Calif. by his parents, Forrest and Myrtle Almquist.

He worked alongside his parents as a young boy harvesting alfalfa, working on the egg farm, at Clark's Wrecking Yard, American Auto Salvage, and on other numerous family ventures.

Gary attended Santa Ana Valley High School and graduated from Costa Mesa Union High School in 1964. He went on to graduate from Orange Coast College in 1966 with a degree in Commercial Art.

As a young man, Gary loved surfing the Southern California coast, water skiing, and participated in the second annual 27-mile "Catalina to Balboa Outrigger Canoe Race" on the Orange County team. He loved cars, and one of his favorites was his surfing vehicle, a 1956 Pontiac Safari Station Wagon.

Gary met Claire Donnan in Orange County California, and they married in 1973.

Shortly thereafter, he began his construction career building custom homes, commercial buildings, and concrete tilt up industrial buildings. In 1978, Gary and Claire moved to the Rogue Valley, making their home in Talent, Ore. He continued his business as Gary Almquist Construction and then Green Gables Construction.

Gary was very adventurous, and together with Claire, they enjoyed traveling abroad and exploring the United States. He enjoyed camping, fishing, and golfing . He participated in a yearly tournament in Parker, Arizona with his long-time best friends. In 2016 he was especially proud of hitting a "hole in one" in Borrego Springs, Calif. where he loved exploring the desert.

Gary was a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. He was very proud of his family and guided them with strength, compassion, and wisdom. He will be remembered as a truly "good guy."

He is survived by his wife of 45 years, Claire; daughter, Kristine Almquist [Eric Deitrick] and grandson, Emmett of Portland, Ore.; daughter, Katie [Doug] Lowry and grandsons Forrest and Connor of Medford, Ore.; as well as granddaughter, Amanda Dilger of Huntington Beach, Calif.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; his sister, Melody; daughter, Melisa; and infant grandson, Andrew.

In addition, the family extends their sincere appreciation and thanks to Noy Rances for his compassionate care of Gary.

A celebration of Gary's life will be held from 4 p.m to 8 p.m. Friday, August 3, 2018 at the Sun Oaks Club House, located at 2485 Sun Oaks Dr., Medford, Ore.
