Barbara Hetzel

March 4, 1947 -

March 12, 2021

Barbara Lee Watt Hetzel was born March 4, 1947 in Maxwell, California. She died March 12, 2021 in Medford, Oregon after a hard fought battle with cancer. Barbara has lived in Yuba City, California, Eagle River, Alaska and Medford, Oregon and had a way of gathering friends wherever she went. People were drawn to her for many reason, but especially her sweet smile, loving personality and spiritual glow.

At the young age of 13 she began playing piano in church services. She had a true talent in music ministry to make you feel her love of the Lord, music and all people. As she continued to study music she came to a crossroads of becoming a professional performer or teaching music. It was clear to her that her calling was in teaching piano because she loved the close bond that you share with people in a teaching environment. Her love of people and music shone brightly in her dedicated work as a piano teacher for over 55 years touching many students with her gifts. She was a patient, compassionate joyful teacher that brought out the best in her students.

She also continued to perform in church services, small ensembles and as an accompanist as well as often being a church choir director. Her latest position was the Music Director at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. She had a gift of recruiting singers and musicians for her choirs who thought they didn't have enough talent, were too busy or just done with music and renewed the love and joy of music in them.

While music was a major part of her life, her deepest love was her family and spending time with her grandchildren. She was proud of each one of them for their own unique gifts and showered them with love. Whenever she was around them she was at her happiest up to her very last day.

She will be deeply missed by her children and spouses, Paul and Karen, Norman and Jill and Ronna and Tommy; by her grandchildren Connor, Hayden, Sophie, Claire, Joey, Madison, TJ and Brianna; by her brother and spouse Jim and Sue and by her extended family and many friends. Funeral services will be held on April 9th at 11:00AM at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, reception to follow. On Monday the 12th we will have an intimate graveside ceremony at Sutter Cemetery in Yuba City, CA at 10:30AM. Instead of flowers please consider donating to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation.
